Silat Suffian Bela Diri
Nation of Brunei Abode of Peace
Silat is a collection of marital arts styles endemic to Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. It comprises a variety of provincial, tribal, arts that are often shared directly through family members.
Suffian, like dust in the wind, is the Malay name given to Maul Mornie by his grandfather while training their family’s art as a child. This art evolved through many generations of use within Maul’s family. During this time, it was heavily influenced by environmental constraints, primarily limited space. As such, concepts (rather than techniques) such as efficiency in movement and weapon utility are the focus.
Together with the Malay term for martial arts, bela diri, Silat Suffian Bela Diri (SSBD) is the tribal combat style practiced within Maul Mornie’s family. In turn, Maul has shared this tribal style outside of Brunei among a larger community of martial artists.
Silat Suffian Americas began as a martial arts training group in Washington, DC metro area. We train and promote Bruneian tribal arts, specifically the intellectual property of Maul Mornie.
As interest in this art grew, SSBD study groups developed throughout the world. To maintain and promote Bruenian martial art education, members of the Washington DC metro area training group formed Kelasak LLC, DBA Silat Suffian Americas, as the sole distributor of Maul Mornie’s intellectual property in North and South America.
Since formation, Silat Suffian Americas has trained martial artists across US and Latin America, as well as members of United States Secret Service and Federal Air Marshal Service. During the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual training continues Saturdays and Sundays.
Silat Suffian Americas maintains a foreign license agreement with Kelasak Martial Arts of Negara Brunei Darussalam. We own USPTO service mark 90025653 and offer sub-licensing to qualifying SSBD study groups.
